Makhachev waves off retirement, chases win record
UFC 330 fight week owns the calendar, with Islam Makhachev batting away retirement chatter as he closes on the longest win streak in company history against Ian Machado Garry in Philadelphia. Away from the main event, PFL locked in Cris Cyborg's expected MMA farewell for Aug. 22, and a late injury reshuffled the UFC 330 undercard. Khabib Nurmagomedov, in town to corner Makhachev, resurfaced with a long interview on the McGregor era.
Makhachev shuts down retirement talk, targets a 20-fight streak
On UFC 330 fight week, Joe Rogan floated the idea that Makhachev (28-1) could follow Khabib Nurmagomedov and retire on top if he submits Ian Machado Garry on Saturday in Philadelphia. Makhachev flatly rejected it, saying he feels healthy at 34, isn't done, and wants to push his UFC-record win streak to 20. A win over Garry breaks Anderson Silva's mark of 16 straight and makes Makhachev the fifth fighter to defend titles in two divisions. Dana White says he'll weigh the GOAT question only after seeing Saturday's performance.
Why it matters: The record streak and two-division reign put Makhachev squarely in the GOAT debate, and whether he keeps going or walks away on top reshapes the entire welterweight title picture behind him.

Cyborg to close out MMA career against Vieira at PFL Tampa
PFL finalized its Aug. 22 card at Benchmark International Arena in Tampa, headlined by Cris Cyborg (29-2) defending the women's featherweight title against fellow Brazilian Ketlen Vieira (16-5) in what the promotion bills as her final MMA fight. Former PFL lightweight champion Gadzhi Rabadanov returns against newcomer Tracy Reeder in the co-main after Jakub Kaszuba withdrew. The card also features Taila Santos, Natan Schulte and 2025 tournament winner Marcirley Alves.
Why it matters: One of the most decorated women in MMA history is set to walk away, and Vieira — a former UFC bantamweight title challenger — gets a chance to spoil the send-off and take PFL gold.
Ochoa injury reshuffles UFC 330 undercard; Turner bumped up
Jose Ochoa withdrew from his UFC 330 flyweight bout with Charles Johnson due to injury, and former LFA champion Eduardo Henrique (15-2) — a recent Contender Series competitor passed over for a contract — steps in on a few days' notice to make his UFC debut. The switch pushed Johnson off the main card and promoted Jalin Turner's lightweight return against Kaue Fernandes into the five-fight main-card lineup. The Philadelphia card holds at 12 bouts and two title fights.
Why it matters: Short-notice debuts and reshuffled slots are fight-week routine, but Turner's jump to the main card hands the returning contender a bigger stage on Saturday.
Dern-Robertson grudge simmers ahead of UFC 330 co-main
Strawweight champion Mackenzie Dern (16-5) makes her first title defense against Gillian Robertson (17-8) in Saturday's co-main event, a grappler-vs-grappler matchup between the two winningest submission artists in UFC women's history. Robertson, on a five-fight run and chasing Canada's first UFC champion since Georges St-Pierre, says she now dislikes Dern and plans to 'make it dirty' for a TKO. Dern says she holds no personal grudge but has 'tricks up my sleeve.'
Why it matters: A Robertson win would end Canada's near-decade title drought and tee up a bout with Zhang Weili; a Dern defense would answer critics who still question the legitimacy of her reign.
Khabib names McGregor his toughest mental test, credits White's 'cold-blooded' UFC
In Philadelphia to corner Makhachev, Khabib Nurmagomedov gave a long interview with Lex Fridman, calling his UFC 229 grudge match with Conor McGregor the toughest fight mentally of his career to that point and crediting the 'real' rivalry for pushing the bout beyond the sport. He praised Dana White as a 'cold-blooded' genius who always put the UFC first, ranked Joe Rogan the promotion's second-most-important figure, and called his own eventual appearance on Rogan's podcast 'inevitable.'
Why it matters: The retired champion turned coach remains one of the sport's most influential voices, and his read on the McGregor era and White's methods lands as MMA's biggest weekend unfolds.
